Four hunt Open League semi-final spots
TEAMS in the ‘Elite’ Group of the 2012-2013 JNBS/JNA Sunshine Open League will be going all out for wins as the competition continues this afternoon at the Leila Robinson Courts.
The four ‘Elite’ games will start at 6:20 pm, while the ‘B’ Group is scheduled to begin action at 1:00.
Today’s four matches will decide the final positions the teams finish. The top four teams in the ‘Elite’ Group will qualify for the next Thursday’s semi-finals, while the top two teams from ‘B’ Group will advance to the quarter-finals knockout stage slated for next Tuesday.
Prior to this afternoon’s final round of matches, in both sections, defending champion JAMALCO lead the ‘Elite’ Group points standings with 15 from six games, followed by Waulgrovians ‘A’ and UWI Pelicans ‘A’, both on 13 points also from six matches.
Waulgrovians ‘A’ have a better goal difference over the Pelicans of 137 for and 108 against to 120-106.
In fourth position are Tivoli ‘A’ with 12 points from six games, Mico ‘A’ have seven from six, GC Foster Strikers ‘A’ also seven from six, Cable Pro three from six, and newcomers Global United ‘A’ without a point after six matches.
Meanwhile, champions JAMALCO pulled off a close and exciting, 19-17, win over arch-rivals Waulgrovians ‘A’ last Tuesday to end their opponents’ unbeaten run. Interestingly, the four top teams have all lost matches — with Tivoli ‘A’ losing two and the other three one apiece.
Today’s matches are very important for the four top teams as they will know at the end who they will meet in the semi-finals.
Champions JAMALCO should have an easy passage against Cable Pro, Waulgrovians ‘A’ should get the better of Global United ‘A’, UWI Pelicans ‘A’ are favoured to secure victory over unpredictable Mico ‘A’, while Tivoli ‘A’ need a big win over GC Foster Strikers ‘A’ to further their cause.
