GANGNEUNG, Republic of Korea — Jamaica put on a disciplined showing yesterday to blank Caribbean rivals Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) 4-0 in floor hockey at the Kwandong University Indoor Centre to remain in contention for a gold medal place finish at the Pyeongchang 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games.

Omar Brown, Sydney Manyan, Andre Folkes, and Lucan Jones scored the goals for Jamaica to seal their second win in the four-team division after Thursday’s 11-2 mauling of the United States.

The other team in the division is the Hungarian outfit, which has already twice defeated the Jamaicans — a 0-2 scoreline in a preliminary match and a close 2-3 result in their second meeting.

Yesterday, Jamaica used superior strength, pace and athleticism to carve open pesky T&T on several occasions and could have scored more had it not been for some faulty finishing at times.

Perhaps even more admirable was their defensive organisation, which skilfully doused the rare attacking sparks that the Trinidad unit managed to muster.

Jamaica’s assistant coach Michelle Romans expressed satisfaction at coming out on top in the derby match and added that she was encouraged by her team’s defending.

“The performance was good, although I think it could have been better… we wanted to score more goals to really make a point. Still, we are happy, because the other Caribbean teams are always coming for us so getting that win was great.

“The defending was great… we had a solid defence and the players tried their best not to concede, and definitely that’s how we (the coaching staff) want to see them play going forward,” she said.

With the Special Olympics Games’ unique method of placing floor hockey teams in divisions based on similar abilities, the tough trio of Jamaica, Hungary and Trinidad & Tobago will again square off in an advanced round, which starts today.

Jamaica will open proceedings at the Gangneung Sports Centre against nemesis Hungary.

Despite the previous losses to the Hungarians, Jamaica’s assistant coach remains hopeful that it will be third-time lucky for the 2009 gold medallists.

“It (beating Trinidad) is a boost, and we are hoping to do much better against Hungary when we meet,” Romans said.

Meanwhile, the figure skating pair of Tamra Mitchell and Nigel Davis, who both got a break from action yesterday, will dance on the ice rink (skating surface) at the Yongpyong Dome today.

The two gave solid, if not outstanding performances, in the individual and team events at the Gangneung Ice Rink on Thursday and will look to continue their march towards a historic figure-skating medal.
