Boyz’ gutsy performance reignites World Cup dream
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica’s match at the Azteca is over, but discussions about the Reggae Boyz’ historic nil all draw against Mexico at the dreaded stadium in Mexico City has taken centre stage and will no doubt continue for a very long time.
In the Corporate Area Thursday morning Jamaicans, including the naysayers, spoke with pride at the possibility of Jamaica making the finals of another World Cup after France in 1998.
“Boss me love the match, this just goes to show say Jamaica team can go places,” said taxi operator Clifford Wright.
As he sat in his vehicle at the intersection of King Street and North Parade waiting for the traffic light to change, a smile lit up the cab driver’s face.
“A the first me ever sit down and watch a Jamaica match right through,” he commented.
Wright was one of several local football fans who spoke about the match with excitement after the country woke up to the news of a workman like performance from the Boyz in the CONCACAF final round of qualifiers for Brazil.
“The youth them really mature, we come a far way, we hold out Mexico,” said Samuel Wright, along Mountain View.
Ralph Walker a worker at the Caribbean Cement Company said he was encouraged.
“I am really happy to hear the results and looking forward to greater things,” said the senior citizen as he swept the side walk close to the company.
Before last night’s match, Jamaica have suffered massive defeats against Mexico – 8-0, 6-0 and 4-0 drubbings – in previous World Cup qualifying fixtures.
