Mister C, Rowes Strikers for skittles final
MISTER C and Rowes Strikers will contest tomorrow’s final of the Jamaica Skittles Federation/Pattex Competition at the Mystix Sports Bar after defeating Eagles strikers and Eastern All Stars 5-4 and 5-3, respectively, in last Sunday’s semi-final action.
Mister C managed to turn the tables on defending champions Eagles in the feature match at the Bejon Sports Bar on Molynes Road.
The Spanish Town-based Mister C’s opening striker Basil Kelly out-cued his former teammate Clinton Thompson, 660-500, to give his team an early lead before former female singles champion Monica Lewis beat Karlene Donaldson, 640-490, to make it 2-0.
But veteran Rudolph ‘Niya’ Mullings teamed up with Shomari Mendez to beat Anthony Channer and Aubyn Flynn, 980-720, in a doubles game as Eagles pulled one back.
Mister C regained their two-game advantage when Lewis teamed up with her son Herman Thorpe to beat Everald ‘Slicer’ McPherson and Paulette Barrett, 670-420, in the mixed doubles.
The competition’s Most Valuable Player, Dane Jones, maintained his unbeaten run after a 820-430 win over Neville ‘Doggie’ Elleston to bring his team back into contention.
Kelly then joined forces with another former Eagles player Emmanuel Munda to defeat many time singles champion Robert ‘World Man’ McKen and Jones in the men’s doubles 890-500.
With just one win away from the final, Mister C skipper Aubyn Flynn, selected Keito ‘Bibi’ Stephens to take home the bacon, McKen pulled out all the stops and came out victorious with a 870-670 score-line.
And when Fred ‘Busman’ March out-played Munda 1090-920, Eagles came soaring back to force the match into the deciding ninth game.
Mister C then called on their motivator young Yannick Senior, who destroyed the more-fancied Seymour Bennett, 1280-400, as the Spanish Town team celebrated victory 5-4.
Rowe’s Strikers put in a workmanlike performance to defeat the dangerous Eastern All-Stars 5-3.
Errol Wright started the ball rolling by beating an out of sorts 2011 Sista National singles champion Winston ‘Wimpy’ Lyew 1,050-460 to hand Rowe’s a 1-0 lead.
The effective Charleen Phoenix even the scores by outcuing Ruthlyn Bailey, 790-670, in the women’s game.
Eastern then pushed their head in front when Fitzroy Blair and Jehan Richards, got by Alton Young and Gary Brown, 720-560, in the men’s doubles before Rowe’s evened the score after Durrant ‘Busha’ Davis and Jacynth ‘Gigi’ Kellier got by Sydney Corrington and Camille Clarke, 1,070-750.
Keith ‘Colterer’ Barrett gave Eastern a sniff of victory when he out-classed Lenville Pottinger, 1430-670.
But Rowe’s strikers had other ideas and the battle of the captains between Rowe’s Raval Montague and Nehemiah ‘Fattarax’ Henry, proved to be a humdinger.
Montague raced in front after playing two sweet 400 shots and seemed to have the game sewn up but Henry pulled himself back into contention with two 400 shots of his own to wild shouts from the eastern supporters. Montague, however, held his nerve to hold on 1960-1550.
Clifford ‘Shakes’ Campbell has earned himself a reputation of being a giant killer who soaks up pressure and the veteran lived up to his billing and secured the victory for Rowe’s Strikers by upsetting many-time national singles champion Fitzroy Blair 820-nil.
The winners will pocket $75,000 and the Pattex Fed Cup, while the runner-up will walk away with $30,000.
