Music delight at ‘Expressions of Love 2’

Recently the Holy Trinity Cathedral came to life with sounds of music at the event dubbed Expressions of Love 2. A family concert and silent auction under the distinguished patronage of the Most Rev Charles DuFour, Archbishop of Kingston and HE Celsa Nuno Ambassador of Spain to Jamaica.

Many came out to support a not so popular genre of music that never failed at entertaining. Patrons were treated to five sets of soul inspiring music that brought them through a journey. After Ambassador Celsa Nuno gave a warm welcome to patrons.

Set openers, under the direction of Audley Davidson, Kingston College Chapel Choir came out and captured the audience with their melodious and harmonic voices. They did an excerpt from Magnificat by GB Pergolesi, Ave Marian by G Caccini and Caribbean Hallelujah by B Donaldson.

Next up were the ICHS Glee Club, whom came with a less exciting set than the KC choir. Notwithstanding, they still managed to captivate the full house with a duet starting out their set to the song Pie Jesus by AL Webber, sung by Gabrielle Chin and Lori Burnett. They also gave us renditions of the songs Yesterday by J Lennon and P McCartney and a Jamaican Medley that brought their set to an end.

Special guest performer and internationally renowned Spanish pianist David Gomez was up next.

His theatrical set started out with him entering from the audience playing a Victorian accordion. After reaching the stage, he took the audience through a journey. The piano was his instrument and he certainly used it to the best of his ability. He played pieces from A Piazzola, the Tango Selection, Danzas Espanolas (Spanish dances) by J Turina and Malaguena composed by E Lecuona. He also did The Island, which he composed.

After such an intense and soul stirring energetic set, it was time for a short intermission break. During this segment, the silent auction took place.

After the audience was refreshed by the Wisynco Group and Caribbean Producers of Jamaica, the show resumed with what TEENage dub the performance of the evening. This was the ICHS Symphony Orchestra that had everyone at the edge of their seats. A mixture of young and talented individuals. Conducted by the talented Steven Woodham. Show closers started out with the Widwood Overture by AD Miller.

After which, the Love Duet by H Hanson and the Pirates of the Caribbean by K Badelt came after. Up next was a violin solo by Jovani William accompanied by special guest David Gomez on Piano. They did an awe inspiring rendition to J Massent Mediation from Thais.

Already on a high from Williams performance, the audience was thrilled with the orchestra’s rendition of the Tempest by RW Smith. This rendition surely brought most of the patrons to their feet. But there were more to come. The orchestra followed on the same trend with Fi Mi Love Have Lion Heart by P Ashbourne, accompanied by the ICHS glee club.

The Mission came after by F Morricone, which made way for the final piece of the night Oh Praise Ye the Lord by Noel Dexter. The ICHS Glee club and the KC Chapel Choir joined them and added to an even more fantastic ending which again brought everyone to their feet.

All in all, Expressions of Love 2 was a big success. It attracted some talented youthful performers and gifted directors. The Holy Trinity Cathedral, embassy of Spain, the Immaculate Conception High School (ICHS) and the Symphony Orchestra certainly presented an evening of class.

TEENage was given the opportunity to ask a few questions and the following resulted:

“It’s very nice to be here. The audience was warm and incredible. Music is the only international tongue so it’s like we all spoke the same language”, stated David Gomez.

“This feeling is very hard to describe; it is ineffable. It’s absolutely wonderful to see young Jamaicans play these instruments”, sighed Steven Woodham.

“I am elated! The Cathedral was full, it couldn’t have been better. Everything was wonderful”, exclaimed Her Excellency Celsa Nuño, The Ambassador of Spain to Jamaica.
