No surprises in skittles championship
THERE were no major casualties in Round Two of the Jamaica Skittles Federation/Sista National Open singles tournament at the Bourbon House Sports Bar in East Kingston on Sunday.
Winston ‘Wimpy’ Lyew of Eastern All Stars, the 2011 champion and 2012 beaten finalist, easily put away his female teammate Camille Clarke in straight sets —1220-250,1480-620 and 1310-nil — to make it into the round of 32.
Lyew’s club captain and former champion Nehemiah ‘Fattarax’ Henry also advanced when he out-classed Trevor Williams of Mister C 910-740,1610-100 and 1400-420 for a 3-0 win.
Fitzroy Blair, the 2009 champion, pulled off a 3-1 victory over veteran Winston Jordan, while Rowe’s Strikers’ skipper Raval Montague came out the victor in a thrilling five-game match over Victor Wilson of Olympic Strikers.
Montague took the first two sets before Wilson clawed his way back into contention with scores of 1440-170 and 1390-520 to force a fifth and deciding set. However, the talented Montague outclassed him 1910-530.
Another Eastern All-stars player Lloyd ‘Tiger’ Smith had a straight-set victory over former federation’s President Jacinth Kellier. But Smith’s teammate Sydney Corrington fell to Emmanuel Munda of Mister C 3-2
Luke Patterson of Rowe’s Strikers also outcued Alphanso Stewart of Mystix.
In the battle of the females, Jehanna Richards, who started playing the sport just over two months ago, sent out a strong warning to her rivals, after she recorded a 3-2 victory over former champion Stacy-Ann Miller of Starliners.
After the first four games the scores were level, but Richards won the final set 1090-840 to loud cheers.
Kelliers, Clarke and Iona Anderson also advanced to the semi-final round of the women’s singles competition.
Kellier defeated former champion Paullette Barrett 2-1, Clarke ended the giant-killing run of Richards also with a 2-1 win, while Anderson stopped Charlene Phoenix 580-380, 0-800 and 990-330.
The round of 32 will play tomorrow at the same venue starting at 2:00 pm.
