BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Captain Merissa Aguilleira says she admires the never-say-die attitude of the West Indies women cricket team, which has just returned to the Caribbean after a triumphant series abroad.

The players were greeted by a delegation which included cricket officials, fans and family members when they arrived in Barbados on Sunday after their long stint overseas.

The Trinidadian wicketkeeper/batsman has described as successful the trip, which saw them rebounding to reach the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup, as well as completing T20 and ODI wins over Sri Lanka.

“This has been a long journey for us and this has been the longest trip we have ever been on as a team, but it has been a successful trip,” said Aguilleira.

“It’s the never-say-die attitude that I really like about this team. They have worked really hard and I am really fortunate to be the captain of this team.”

Windies women stormed back impressively, but lost the Final of the ICC Women’s World Cup against Australia Women by 114 runs in India.

Also, they toppled host Sri Lanka 2-1 and 4-1 in ODI and T20I series respectively.

“We have had a lot of challenges along the way, but we stood tall and did what we had to do to ensure success. We could not have achieved as much as we did without the management staff,” Aguilleira explained.

“It was difficult at times because we are a bunch of girls and we can get a bit moody, but they handled it well, and I want to thank them for showing the emotional strength so that we could be successful.”

West Indies women have been climbing the world ranking to be number two in Women’s One-Day Internationals and number four in Women’s Twenty20 Internationals.
