Forbes eyes Beckford’s long jump record
MONTEGO BAY, St James — National men’s long jump champion Damar Forbes says he is eyeing James Beckford’s 16-year-old national record of 8.62m set at a meet in Orlando, Florida, in April 1997.
The Louisiana State University senior, who won the silver medal at last weekend’s NCAA Division One Indoor Championships at the University of Arkansas with a personal best 8.21m, said on the social site Twitter on Sunday: “My eyes outdoor is on the Jamaican national record!!! I will break it within the next 2 years.”
Forbes, who represented Jamaica at last year’s London Olympics and the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea in 2011, also qualified for this year’s IAAF World Championships in Moscow with his jump on Friday.
Forbes’ jump was over the World Championships B qualifying standard of 8.10m and just outside the automatic A standard of 8.25m. According to IAAF rules: “Indoor performances for all field events and for races of 200m and longer, shall be accepted.”
His personal best outdoors is 8.23m set in Iowa in 2011.
