RM Wong-Small scolds cop
MONTEGO BAY, St James — St James Resident Magistrate Sandria Wong-Small was less than impressed with the actions of a constable and his excuse why he allowed a man charged with traffic violations to languish in jail for a month.
Forty-five -year-old Vernon Robinson was arrested on February 6 but was only brought to court on March 5 to answer to charges of driving without a driver’s licence, having no insurance and driving with a disqualified licence.
When the arresting officer was summoned by the RM, his reason for the four -week period was “court days got mixed up on me.”
This response, however, displeased the RM who responded by reminding the young cop what his duties were.
“Officer you clearly don’t understand your duties,” the RM told him, “persons are not supposed to be imprisoned for traffic matters and this is clearly what happened here.”
The RM then admonished and discharged Robinson on the charges of having no driver’s licence and no insurance and fined him $5,000 or three months for driving while being disqualified.
