Moe’s Secret fancied for Clifford Stewart Memorial Cup
A number of talented but problematic runners will take centre stage in the $462,000 Clifford Stewart Memorial Cup highlighter at Caymanas Park today.
Appearing in the $250,000 – $210,000 claiming range three-year-olds and upward and native-bred five-year-olds (NW2), and six-year-olds (NW4), nine will go to post in the Clifford Stewart, going 1,200 metres, at approximately 3:20 pm with first post at 12:20 pm.
The once highly thought of and well-bred Moe’s Secret, Galactus, Lovetta Jones, Mentalist and the imported recent winner Rivers Of Babylon are among the group of runners who are expected to gather at the finish line for a share of the purse.
Moe’s Secret, a once promising three-year-old, has campaigned as high as Overnight Allowance, but in the last year or so, she seems to have declined in ability. For this she has taken a steady drop in the claiming ranks after being given up for a tag of $250,000, She had previously been claimed by Wayne DaCosta for a tag of $550,000 but subsequently failed to justify the tag.
Owned and trained at present by Maurice Crooks, this may just be the right company for the Dayton Flyer four-year-old filly, who is among a number of reluctant runners, and with in-form jockey Omar Walker getting the call, the sister to Argentina could get it right among these.
Galactus is another who should welcome this type of field to return to wining ways. Also by Dayton Flyer, this five-year-old bay gelding owned and trained by Dennis Lee has been fairly consistent in his four runs for the season. He finished 2 1/4 lengths third on March 6 going 1,100 metres, and going a bit farther with Kuri Powell and the apprentice claim of 4.0kg still tact, it should not be difficult for the apprentice to guide him home going a distance he last won in June of last year.
Rivers Of Babylon was a winner on last in the grade below but was convincing enough to be afforded a chance going 1,200 metres.
Mentalist is another who should enjoy this type of field. Should be considered a big disappointment, but at this level can come into her own and could restore confidence in this He’sarealthing four-year-old colt, trained by Anthony Nunes for owners Elias Haloute & Stephan Narinesingh. Shane Ellis, who was aboard when Mentalist, opened his account over today’s distance, returns to the saddle.
However, one who could surprise this field is the James S Thomas-owned and Patrick Lynch-trained Tommy Fiddle. Though not as resolute where he is expected to be, the small-framed son of Storm Craft has shown in his last couple of races that he is rounding into fitness and with the strong Panamanian jockey Ameth Robles slated, and a change in equipment, could come running on to go all the way.
