I’ll miss Jamaica, says Jeter
MONTEGO BAY, St James — American sprinter Carmelita Jeter says she will miss being at this weekend’s Jamaica International Invitational (JII) at the National Stadium after opting to compete at the Cayman Invitational next Wednesday.
“It will be different not being in Jamaica,” she told journalists, while attending the 119th Penn Relays in Philadelphia last weekend.
Jeter, who has won the last three women’s 100m at the JII event said: “I will miss being there, I get so much love there.”
Jeter won a full set of medals at last year’s London Olympics, a gold while anchoring the US women’s’ 4x100m team to a new World Record 40.82 seconds; a silver in the 100m in 10.78 seconds behind Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and a bronze in the 200m in 22.14 seconds behind teammate Allyson Felix and Fraser-Pryce.
She, however, sat out Saturday’s 4x100m race, watching in agony as Jamaica turned the tables on a strong US team to win in 42.42 seconds, grimacing and turned away sharply after Fraser-Pryce held off Porsha Lucas on the USA Blue team.
The USA Red team of Tianna Bartoletta, Allyson Felix, Bianca Knight and Jeneba Tarmoh was third. Tarmoh, who ran the heats in London, replaced Jeter on the team that won in London.
Jeter said she was advised by her coaches not to run in Philadelphia after she picked up a cramp at a meet a week earlier.
