LONDON, England (AP) — Amateur boxing association chief CK Wu of Taiwan is entering the race for president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Wu notified Jacques Rogge yesterday that he will be a candidate to succeed him as head of the IOC, an official with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because Wu hasn’t officially announced his decision yet.

Wu, a 66-year-old architect, plans to declare his candidacy at a news conference in Taipei next Thursday.

The official told the AP that Wu delivered a letter to Rogge in Lausanne, Switzerland, confirming his plans to stand for election.

Wu will become the third candidate to succeed Rogge, who steps down in September after 12 years as president. IOC vice presidents Thomas Bach of Germany and Ng Ser Miang of Singapore were the first two members to enter the race.

Richard Carrion of Puerto Rico and Sergei Bubka of Ukraine are expected to declare soon.

Wu, an IOC member since 1988, has been president of the International Amateur Boxing Association, or AIBA, since 2006. He was elected to the IOC’s policy-making executive board last year as a representative of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations.

Wu was a member of the IOC coordination commissions for the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, and 2008 Beijing Olympics. He currently sits on the coordination panel for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Last month, Wu played host to numerous IOC members in Tianjin, China, for the opening of a museum he designed to honour the late IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Earlier this week, AIBA’s executive committee recommended that Wu run for IOC president.

“It would be a great pride and honour for both AIBA and the sport of boxing if President (Wu) had any chance to represent the international Olympic movement,” the committee said.

The IOC election will be held on September 10 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
