VCB leads J’cans to NY Adidas Grand Prix
MONTEGO BAY, St James — World and Olympic champion Veronica Campbell Brown will headline a strong contingent of Jamaican and Caribbean athletes scheduled to take part in the adidas Grand Prix, an IAAF Diamond League track meet to be held at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island on Saturday, May 25.
Campbell Brown, who has won both sprints at this event, is scheduled to run the 200m at the meet where nearly 24 Jamaican athletes are expected to take part in several events. World Championships finalist Anneisha McLaughlin has been listed to run the 200m as well.
A number of high school relay teams from Jamaica, including Vere Technical, Munro College and Manchester high are also expected to compete against their American counterparts at the meet.
Olympic 200m bronze medallist Warren Weir and IAAF Diamond race champion Nickel Ashmede, the two fastest men in the world so far, are expected to clash in the men’s 200m that will also see World Championships semi-finalist Mario Forysthe and Ramone McKenzie also taking part.
Olympic relay gold medallists Kemar Bailey-Cole and Nesta Carter will line up in the men’s 100m along with World University Games champion Jacques Harvey.
Olympic relay silver medallists Sherone Simpson and Schillonie Calvert along with Aleen Bailey have been listed to take part in the women’s 100m where they will line up against Trinidad’s Kelly-Ann Baptiste and American Olympic relay gold medallist Tianna Madison Bartoletta.
The women’s 400m race should be one of the highlights with the seasonal debut of Olympic champion Sanya Richards-Ross, who will face the ever improving Stephanie McPherson, as well as Amantle Montsho of Botswana, a former winner in New York, and Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain, the Olympic silver medallist.
Jamaica’s former Olympic Games and World Championships silver medallist Shericka Williams and Olympic Games finalists Novlene Williams Mills and Rose Marie Whyte will complete the line up.
Quarter-milers Allodin Fothergill, Leford Green, and Riker Hylton, 800m runner Kenia Sinclair, national discus record holder Allison Randall and javelin thrower Kateema Riettie are also expected to take part in the meet.
