LABOUR DAY 2013: Lend a Hand… Build Our Land
GOVERNMENT, corporate Jamaica and individuals will today participate in several projects as the country observes Labour Day. The day is being commemorated under the theme ‘Lend a Hand… Build Our Land’, and the St Mary Infirmary has been designated the national project. Here are some other projects that willl be undertaken across the island:
Sagicor
Sagicor has ‘adopted’ the Jebb Memorial Basic School as its Labour Day project this year. The aim of the project is to increase the student population at the school. As such, Sagicor staff will be “giving the school and its immediate surroundings a facelift in order to make it more visible” to passers-by.
Flow
The Charles Gordon Market in Montego Bay and Spanish Town Market in Spanish Town will both be the beneficiaries of Labour Day work to give the respective facilities facelifts. Flow has allocated $300,000 to support the two projects.
Courts
Courts will be undertaking beautification work at four of the Mustard Seed Children’s Homes across the country.
LIME
Staff members of LIME will be putting their hands to work at the Homestead Place of Safety, located in Stony Hill.
The project, valued over $600,000, is being spearheaded by the LIME Foundation and will see volunteers from the company spending the day assisting with refurbishing of the bathroom facilities and entrance of the place of safety.
Digicel Foundation
More than 50 volunteers from the Digicel Foundation will today put the finishing touches on 16 cottages at the Denham Town Golden Age Home in Kingston. Work had already begun on the cottages, to include repairs to roofs, doors, bathrooms and plumbing. Today, the volunteers will largely undertake cosmetic work like painting.
Manchester Chamber of Commerce
The D Frank’s Early Childhood Institute is a project of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce (MCOC), which was officially launched earlier this year. In keeping with the theme for Labour Day, the MCOC will focus on carrying out landscaping work at the school.
