Vox Pop Do you think condoms should be distributedin-schools
Education Minister Rev Ronald Thwaites has said that Government is against the distribution of condoms in schools. This is despite calls for some quarters for them to be made available to students.
Earlier this week Jamaica Observer West photographer Alan Lewin took to the streets of St James to get the views of the people on the matter.
Below are some of the responses:
Cecil Sinclair, businessman:
“No condoms should be distributed in schools. If they are made available to the students, they probably will want to explore all type of sexual fantasies.”
Fitzroy Dixon, student:
“Yes, condoms should be distributed in schools. A safe sex we sey.”
Christina Peynado, student:
“No. It should not be distributed in schools. I feel that would be promoting sex. Anyone who wants to have sex should find their own form of protection.”
Zerica Irving, hair dresser:
“No, because it they give them condoms they are encouraging them to have sex, and they may (have) sex in the toilets at school.”
Toni- Ann Ricketts, student:
“Yes, because some students are having sex and not using condoms. The condoms will help prevent unwanted pregnancy and the spread of sexual transmitted diseases.”
Yashanique Turner, student:
“No. School children are not ready for sex. They are ready for books and if they are sexually active, they should stop it.”
A Chen, teacher:
” No. I think it is wrong. Its like promoting sex in school. The students are young children and they should abstain.”
