Mona Campus surge ahead at UWI Games
MONA Campus surged to the lead in the points standing of the University of the West Indies Inter Campus Games yesterday as, up to press time, they moved 90 points clear after showing their prowess in track and field.
St Augustine Campus, from Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), started the day out front on 305 points following hockey, tennis, volleyball, swimming, netball, cricket, and basketball from the previous days.
Jamaica’s Mona Campus was second with 297 points ahead of Cave Hill Campus trailing on 206 points, but the hosts turned on the style and amassed 469 points, ahead of St Augustine with 379, and Cave Hill lagging behind with 328 points.
Mona’s Danecia Mitchell won two field events up to press time, winning the women’s discus with 38.80m ahead of Akilih Martin of Cave Hill with 37.20m, and Candece Ragman of St Augustine with 33.40, some distance back in third spot.
Mitchell later won the long jump with a leap of 5.55m with her teammate Jamie Lee Gordon second with 5.51m for the quinela. Samantha Harrison of Cave Hill finished third with 4.95m.
Mitchell also earned valuable points for Mona grabbing third in the shot put with 10.98 m behind winner Darlene Lewis of St Augustine with 12.51. Lewis was expected to capture another gold after leading in the javelin event.
Mona also had other double winners in Rushel Clayton and Jowayne Hibbert who captured the unique 400 and 800-metre double.
Clayton won the 400m in 56.08 seconds ahead of Mona teammate Renae Ambersley in 56.19, and the 800 metres in 2:18.70, again ahead of Ambersley in 2:22.09 seconds
Hibbert took the men’s 400m in 47.84, as Mona again finished one, two, with Marzel Miller second in 48.47 seconds.
Hibbert was at it again capturing the 800m in 1:52.10 minutes ahead of Kemar Norgrove of Cave Hill in 1:53.79 minutes.
Mona’s Kavean Smith won the men’s 100m in 10.54 seconds, while Lesline Gilzene of Mona took the women’s equivalent in 11.90 seconds, and doubled up with 23.97 for gold in the 200m. Smith also won the 200m in 21.12 seconds.
Jermaine Hinds of Cave Hill won the 100m Invitational in 10.58 with Mona’s Vernad Brady second in 10.60.
