Power outage cuts play in CSports Business House Rally semis
A JPS power outage cut short the final matches of the CSports Business House One Day Rally Sunday at the Mico College University’s gymnasium.
Nine companies locked heads in an exciting day of play, which saw competition in three sections — mixed, male and female. At the end of the day, only two of the three sections were able to be completed.
The Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) won the female section and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) won the mixed team section. The male section was midway the first semi-final game when the power went, halting play. These final matches will be integrated into next week Sunday’s Supreme Ventures Indoor League opening activities at the UWI Bowl.
The lady Gators of the BOJ cut their way to victory in the female division. The BOJ emerged from the round-robin play undefeated and after dampening the National Water Commission’s (NWC) spirits 9-3 in the semi-finals, they once again faced Sagicor, whom they had defeated earlier 9-7 and 9-4 in the double round-robin seeding round.
Sagicor had defeated their sister company Guardian Life 9-7 in the other semi-final, and the Sagicor team that turned up for the final was a very determined team, who had fought the Gators for every point in the round-robin.
They again fought gallantly, but the result was the same — the BOJ triumphing 9-7.
In the mixed team division, the JDF took the title, defeating AMECO. AMECO had upset the more highly fancied Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) 9-8 in the second semi-final, after the JCF had seemed to be on their way to a final match-up with the JDF.
In the final, however, AMECO was no match for the JDF who, true to form, put up a strong defence to the threat against their title. JDF subdued AMECO with a 9-5 victory.
The semi-final match-ups in the male division pitted the JDF against AMECO, and the JCF against Guardian Life. The JDF was leading AMECO 4-2 when play had to be stopped.
The organisers took the decision to complete the competition next Sunday, replaying the first semi-final and following up with the second semis, then the final after the Opening Dress Parade which kicks off the Supreme Ventures Indoor League.
The rescheduled semi-finals and finals will join the programme of exhibition games planned for a 1:30 pm start at the UWI Bowl. The games which begin just after the first set of World Championship games, include an all-media mixed team versus a Business House All-star mixed team and a referees and coaches team versus a male business house All-star team.
The day’s action is scheduled to end before the World Championship games restart for the evening session of play.
