Will you give a ‘Red Card’?
ON March 2013, it was revealed that over 16,000 minors were engaged in child labour activities across Jamaica. This practice can be “mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children and interferes with their schooling by depriving them of the opportunity to attend school”.
This trend, which has been prevalent for years, was addressed the Government of Jamaica and the International Labour Organisation’s implementation of the ‘Give the Red Card to Child Labour’ campaign.
While having children work may be seen as a means of survival or help for the family. Despite this, it is suggested that minors selling on the streets should not be condoned.
