Wes Morgan — a tower of strength in the Boyz backline
Westley ‘Wes’ Morgan has been a revelation for Jamaica in his first game for the country on Friday night.
The Leicester City captain was a picture of composure, vision and subtle aggression in the Reggae Boyz’s 0-0 draw at the Rommel Fernandez Stadium on a rainy Panama night.
Though he has bulk, the central defender was suprisingly effective without using roughness, which would require little effort by him to produce.
Playing in the three-man defence along with Lloyd Doyley and Jermaine Taylor, Morgan broke up numerous Panama-attacking moves and seemed to get his boot in the right place and time.
With his tackles cleanly executed, not once did the referee call him to book.
In addition, it appears he was inspiring others in the back to lift their game as well, including goalkeeping captain Donovan Ricketts.
The goal-less scoreline at the end tells a striking story of a job well done by Morgan and company.
It will be interesting to see how the rearguard posse performs tonight, and with Adrian Mariappa back from card suspension and available for selection, it should be a fortress back there.
But one wonders if the lads at the other end will do their job with deadly precision in a match that Jamaica must win to harbour the faintest of hopes of making Brazil 2014.
Morgan, 29, spent most of his career with his boyhood club Nottingham Forest where he had been a regular at centre-back for the club for several years before moving to Leicester City in January 2012.
After being rejected by Nottingham Forest’s near neighbours Notts County at the age of 15, Morgan had contemplated abandoning football as a career option, but then the chance came to join Forest, and with it a change of heart.
