England 4 Montenegro 1: Terrific Townsend lights up Wembley as Roy’s boys seal vital victory

England will reach the World Cup with a win over Poland on Tuesday after an Andros Townsend-inspired victory over Montenegro at Wembley.

After a goalless first half, Wayne Rooney gave England the lead three minutes after the restart with a scuffed finish and a Branko Boskovic own goal doubled the hosts’ lead.

Dejan Damjanovic pulled one back for Montenegro but debutant Townsend, who was lively all night, walloped home a superb third to ease any nerves. Daniel Sturridge scored an added-time penalty after he was fouled.
