In Texas, 51-48 is the number — oh yeah!
The headline for this week’s column was inspired by Toots and the Maytals’ big hit of yesteryear — 5446 That’s My Number.
What was even more inspiring was watching the shoot-out, in Arlington, Texas, between the Dallas Cowboys and the Denver Broncos last Sunday. The final score, Broncos 51, Cowboys 48, was indicative of the fireworks that began from the get-go. As far as games go, this one had to be the most entertaining of the season and inasmuch as I am no fan of the Cowboys I had to give them kudos for a spirited performance against a team that has seemed like an unstoppable train.
Dallas’ much-criticised quarterback Tony Romo played a heck of a game in racking up 505 yards passing and five touchdowns, while lighting up the stadium with his passes to, among others, Dez Bryant, who had six catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Romo’s one mistake was throwing a late interception that sealed the Cowboys’ fate, but all in all, he had a good outing. And as usual, so did the other quarterback, Peyton Manning, who, despite a fast opening by the Cowboys, never flinched and did what Manning does best: rip defences apart.
Monday Night Football always seems to have match-ups that are interesting and entertaining and the New York Jets’ 38-13 upset win over the Atlanta Falcons proved to be just that. Coming off a turbulent pre-season chock-full of on-field and off-field incidents, the Jets seemed to be in trouble. They had quarterback issues involving their previous starter Mark Sanchez and his then back-up, the rookie Geno Smith. They had head coach issues fuelled by the volatile Rex Ryan. All this under the glare and hostility of the dreaded New York media.
Just about everyone had written off the Jets for the season. Everyone except for the Jets themselves. And Monday night’s win over the Falcons was a case in point and a kind of redemption for Geno Smith, who had been feeling the early-season criticisms. Smith completed 16 of 20 passes for 199 yards, three touchdown passes and no interceptions, in spite of being sacked four times. The rookie protected the ball every time and when he threw he was bang-on target. I’m not a fan of any New York team, be it football, baseball, hockey or basketball. Matter of fact, I’m not a fan of New York, period (big cities bug me). But I like Geno Smith and I wish him well. And at 3-2, the Jets are right there in the thick of things.
As we enter week 6 of what has been a most interesting season so far, we see that there are three teams that remain undefeated and, at the other end of the scale, four teams that remain winless. The biggest surprise in the winless column has to be the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Giants are 0-5 in the NFC East, while the Steelers are 0-4 in the AFC North. Usually, these two are at or near the top of their divisions with their sights set on the post-season. Not so this time around. Also winless are the Jacksonville Jaguars of the AFC South and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC South.
Meanwhile, basking in the glow of success thus far are the New Orleans Saints of the NFC South who are 5-0 and, in the most interesting division of all, the AFC West, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos are both 5-0. Incidentally, there was a game last night between the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears and, depending on the result, the Giants could be in an even deeper hole. Having picked the Bears to beat them, my guess is that they did.
Things keep going my way in the battle of the so-called experts making weekly picks against the point spread. Yours truly again led the way last week, posting a 9-4 picks record, which puts me in the overall lead at 44-33 on the season. Both Peter Lindo and Andre Hutchinson were 6-8 last week, while Andrei Roper, having a really tough season so far, was 5-9. Could yours truly be in line for a three-peat having been top dog each of the last two seasons? We’ll have to wait and see.
A few thoughts on this week’s games: The winless Steelers are facing the Jets and could possibly be 0-6 at the end of the day. The Denver Broncos are facing the Jacksonville Jaguars, the worst team in the League, in a game that JustBet sports betting has the Broncos favoured by 26.5 points, which ties the largest point spread in NFL history.
To put it in perspective, the Broncos have been scoring 46 points per game, which is 16 points more than the second-highest scoring team in the league, the Dallas Cowboys. The Jaguars, on the other hand, are averaging 10 points a game, the worst in the league. Still, the Broncos should not let their guard down and take the Jags for granted because you never know.
In the battle of two of the best signal-callers in the game, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots host Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints in a game that is not to be missed, and one that should be a shoot-out. The much-anticipated Washington Redskins vs Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday night could prove to be a bit anticlimactic as I strongly believe that the Cowboys are going to manhandle Robert Griffin III and company.
Then, on Monday Night Football, the San Diego Chargers travel to Indianapolis to face Andrew Luck and the Colts, in a match-up of two good quarterbacks — the veteran Rivers vs the young gun Luck. All in all it should be an entertaining weekend of football.
