THE hundreds of fans at the Melbourne CC were treated to exciting action from the slew of sporting stars and celebrity personalities at yesterday’s cricket festival.

In the featured second match at the venue, the Jamaica All Stars XI defeated the Caribbean All Stars by five wickets.

Scores: Caribbean All Stars XI 168-5 (20 overs); Jamaica All Stars XI 172-5 (17.3 overs).

The Caribbean team took first strike and made 168-5, thanks to Jon Ross Campbell’s 68 and West Indies big-hitter Kieron Pollard’s 45.

West Indies 50-overs Captain Dwayne Bravo made four, sprint star Yohan Blake (one), ex-West Indies skipper Richie Richardson played a couple trademark back-foot shots before retiring on eight, and the legendary

fast-bowling pair of Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose sparked plenty of laughter during their respective knocks of two and six not out.

In their run-chase, Jamaica XI were led by Garth Garvey (41 retired), Wayne Morgan (31 not out) and Jermaine Blackwood (29).

Former Reggae Boy Ricardo Gardner made two, while high-rated Twenty20 batsman Christopher Gayle made 13, and Andre Russell added 11.

The double-header at Derrymore Road was a partnership between Melbourne CC and the Wavell Hinds-chaired Cricket Clubs Activities Committee (CCAC) and the second stop for the weekend after Saturday’s event at the Manley Horne Park in Ballard’s Valley, St Elizabeth.

In the early game at the venue, Melbourne XI beat Media & Celebrities XI by 33 runs.

The Melbourne XI batted first and posted a challenging 160-8 off 20 overs and their bowlers returned to dismiss the Media & Celebrities for 127 with 11 balls to spare.

Sadiki Bolt, the brother of sprint king Usain, top scored with an even 50 for the Melbourne team. Damion Jacobs hit 38 and Yannick Elliott chipped in with 28.

Damion Bryce (25), Ralston Nelson (21) and Bereston Reid (20) made the most runs in the Media & Celebrities failed chase.

Minister with responsibility for sports Natalie Neita-Headley, who was in the field for the entire 20 overs of the Melbourne innings, contributed two runs for the Celebrities before she was bowled by leg-spinner Damion Jacobs.

Others participating in the festival included Jamaica skipper Tamar Lambert, former pacers Nixon McLean and Corey Colleymore, and current regional cricketers Sulieman Benn and Sheldon Cotterell.
