…’Garvey’ back in Ben Francis after one-year absence
DRAX HALL, St Ann — Marcus Garvey Technical are back in the ISSA/LIME Ben Francis Knockout competition after a year’s absence. This after topping Zone I of the daCosta Cup competition yesterday with a 1-0 win over Cedric Titus High in a rescheduled game at Drax Hall in St Ann.
Rohan Hall’s goal was enough for the St Ann school to beat their Trelawny-based opponents for the second time this season and confirm their dominance after also winning the first-round game by the same score.
Marcus Garvey, who went into the game with a slim one-point lead, finished their first-round schedule with 28 points from 10 games as Cedric Titus ended on 24 points.
Marcus Garvey will now face Clarendon College at Juicy Beef Field in Clarendon in the first round of the Ben Francis Knockout.
Meanwhile, Holmwood Technical came from a goal down to beat Alston 3-1 and snatch the final place into the Inter-zone round, one of the two best second-placed teams, pipping Edwin Allen High on goal difference and snapping a six-year span where they have failed to get past the first round.
In a hastily arranged game, Michael Hamilton scored his 11th goal of the season, while Jevaughn Bailey and David Williams also added goals as Holmwood improved to 14 points from eight games in Zone G, the identical statistics for Edwin Allen High in Zone H, but had the better goal difference to join Frome Technical as the two-best third-placed teams.
Holmwood Technical and Edwin Allen had finished with similar points average of 1.75 and for this the tie-breaker was necessary.
The Zone G schools had agreed to forego the game after Saturday’s round of matches had made it unnecessary. However, after yesterday’s decision by ISSA to dock six points from Clarendon College in Zone H, it opened up the door for either Holmwood or Edwin Allen to advance and the game was hurriedly arranged.
In another rescheduled game Rushane Plummer scored twice for St Thomas Technical in their Zone O game against Seaforth High to move to 21 points, one behind zone leaders Paul Bogle High.
