Green Pond star in Ben Francis KO
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Green Pond High announced their arrival with a big 4-1 win over William Knibb Memorial to book their place in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/LIME Ben Francis Knockout competition, yesterday, while two former champions Glenmuir High and Rusea’s were knocked out of the first round by Kemps Hill and Godfrey Stewart, respectively.
There were also wins for Manchester High, Clarendon College, St Mary Technical, and Paul Bogle as the seven winners advanced to Saturday’s quarter-finals where they will be joined by the holders St Elizabeth Technical, who got a bye through the first round.
In the first game of the double-header at Jarrett Park, Kashief Brown and 15-year-old Peter Campbell scored two goals each as Zone A winners Green Pond continued their best-ever run in the competition, beating William Knibb Memorial 4-1.
Brown gave Green Pond the lead in the 34th minute and Campbell made it 2-0 after 55 minutes, but two changes by William Knibb’s coach Garfield Anderson gave the Trelawny school the ascendancy; and Hugh-George Watson, who came on at the start of the second-half, scored in the 69th minute from a pass supplied by another second half substitute Shanwayne Williams to give them some hope.
Campbell, a member of the national Under-15 team this past summer, scored a stunning goal in the 77th minute, when he controlled the ball in close quarters on the left side of the William Knibb area and powered past goalkeeper Mario Downer high into the top far corner.
Brown finished off the scoring in the 90th minute when he scored from close range.
In the second game, Godfrey Stewart beat four-time champions Rusea’s 3-2 on penalty kicks after the teams were tied at 0-0 after regulation and extra time, in a game that was interrupted by a power outage. The game was stopped with 10 minutes to go in the second half, due to darkness, as there was no electrical power to the light towers at the venue. The situation was quickly rectified, however, and the game was allowed to resume after a short break.
Glenmuir High, who has won the title six times, were beaten 1-0 by Kemps Hill, who will now advance to face STETHS in a rematch of last year’s second round.
Insamnia Cohen scored the lone goal as Manchester High edged Christiana High 1-0 and set up a second-round clash against Clarendon College, who hammered Marcus Garvey Technical 6-2 in their game.
St Mary Technical and Paul Bogle repeated first-round wins over Dinthill Technical and Port Antonio High, respectively. St Mary Technical edged Dinthill 1-0 in their game, while Paul Bogle were 5-3 penalty kicks winners after the teams had played out a 1-1 regulation and extra time score line.
