Massive finale for Dover meet
CIRCUIT racing season’s finale — at Monday’s Heroes of Speed meet at Dover Raceway, St Ann — is looking to be an explosive one, according to event organiser Dean Corrodus.
“I call it fuelling the fire of circuit racing competition,” Corrodus told Auto.
The event will see battles on and off the track for supremacy from various sectors including the sponsors, as four of the major petroleum retailers will be represented in full force.
“Texaco is our title sponsor, while RUBiS (Shell), Petcom and Total have their respective representatives,” Corrodus said.
Corrodus, who organised last year’s Caribbean Motor Racing Championship event, also expects new track records to be set in anticipation of the rematch between Douglas Gore and David Summerbell Jr.
Earlier this year, Gore stayed away from the Modified Production class four (MP4) class in protest against the tyre regulations, which he felt worked against his Audi TT-R DTM. Summerbell Jr, on the other hand, gave up on Thundersport (TS) to reduce the stress on his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII. This meant there was no direct racing between them for most of the season.
For this meet, however, Gore announced he will contest one of the two MP4 races in addition to his Thundersport race.
“The executive has promised me that the tyre rules will change for 2014, and out of the goodwill, they’ve shown me I’ll do one MP4 race,” Gore told Auto.
Gore was clear that his aims are nothing short of setting a new lap record and clinching the TS class championship, which he leads.
For Summerbell Jr and Total Summerbell Racing (TSR) the future is their focus at this event.
“We’re working right now with an eye for next season and our partnership with our sponsor, Total. We’re going to try a few different things to decide if we should keep the car, so we could go very quickly if our changes work out,” Summerbell Jr said.
As for having Gore back in Modified Production for one race. “This doesn’t affect our plans,” Summerbell Jr added.
Behind the giants is the remarkable tale of Andre Anderson, who is on his way to meeting an objective his two other TSR teammates — Kyle Gregg and Summerbell Jr — have already achieved, an overall driver’s championship title.
“As long as the car holds together we should win,” said Anderson.
Anderson is also in the lead of bracket 27 (B27) and MP3. While he has held the MP3 title before, the bracket races present a bit of a challenge over his other two championship targets. Should he break out, that is, post a time faster than the bracket, he’ll receive no points for the race.
“We’ve pulled the car apart and rebuilt it to make it more reliable. Right now we’re working on the suspension and handling,” he said.
