VIDEO: Fast, Fun & Tasty

It’s week one of Salut! — our fantastic three-week celebration of the food service industry — and we’re kicking things off with Quick Service Restaurant Week, which started on October 20 and continues through to October 27. Thursday Life took to the streets Tuesday afternoon with five foodie bloggers — Jessica Hylton, of Jessiker Bakes, Stephen Charoo, of Recollections of a Foodie, Monique Solomon, of Irie Diva, and Raquel and Andre Davis of Eat Out Jamaica — on a mini food crawl of some of their favourite fast food chains. The bloggers trekked along the Knutsford Boulevard strip in New Kingston sampling the tasty range of items available on the menus at Island Grill, Pizza Hut, KFC, and Burger King, before ending the tour with a visit to the spanking-new Domino’s Pizza at Sovereign North in Liguanea — live-tweeting every step of the way!

Exploring everything from sweet treats and guilty pleasures to selections for the healthconscious, our bloggers had more than a mouthful of fast food delights. The exceedingly popular Island Grill acted as an appetiser of sorts, with the bloggers opting for meals on the lighter side to jump-start their tour — the classic chicken and red peas soups and the new low calorie barbecue chicken special were among them.

“It’s a delicious, healthy option, it’s just protein and vegetables; essentially it’s a guilt-free meal,” said Charoo, of the barbecue chicken special.

After teasing their taste buds at Island Grill, the bloggers ventured, mere centimetres away, to the recently renovated Pizza Hut. With separate areas for dining and takeout, the new aesthetic invites customers to enjoy an entirely different, family-oriented experience. The new selection of menu items — which includes pastas, salads and desserts — certainly met the approval of our foodies.

“It’s much more inviting to dine in now; the décor is lovely, it’s way more refined. I can actually see myself saying to my friends ‘Let’s meet up at Pizza Hut for some lunch!’ ” gushed Solomon.

Among the favourite dishes here are the Trio Platter — which features buffalo wings, jerk wings, cheesy puffs and ham and cheese spin rolls — the jerk chicken fettuccini, a meaty marinara Tuscany pasta, the strawberry cheesecake and the decadent brownie à la mode.

Down on Dominica Drive, KFC was the next stop. bammy, the steakhouse sandwich, the tendergrill salad, garden salads and onion rings, topping the meal off with the famed, gooey apple pie. Our tour ended at Domino’s Pizza’s newest location at Sovereign North in Liguanea. The family-friendly restaurant has a warm and welcoming feel, the foodies were right at home here, witnessing first-hand the pizzamaking process through the franchise’s latest design feature known as the Pizza Theatre.

“This is nice, you can actually see the process. It makes the wait feel a lot shorter and the pizza is fresh, fluffy and delicious,” said Solomon.

While the mouth-watering pan pizza and the chocolate lava crunch cakes had them craving more, the veritable show-stealer was the wings dipped in a spicy mangohabanero sauce. The bloggers agree it’s a hit, and a great option for people trying to avoid carbs.

“It’s surprisingly good; the combination of sweet and spicy is the perfect mix!” said Charoo of the wings at Domino’s.

Quick Service Restaurant Week continues through to Sunday, October 27, so be sure to head out to your favourite fast food spots to join in the fun yourselves!
