Coach Wedderburn praises STETHS’ tenacity
CLARENDON, Jamaica — STETHS players will enjoy a major boost in confidence, according to coach Omar Wedderburn, following their dramatic come-from-behind victory over Paul Bogle High in Wednesday’s Ben Francis Cup semi-finals.
The Santa Cruz school, looking to win a fourth successive rural area knockout title, were given a major scare when the less-fancied Paul Bogle raced into a 2-0 lead after just 12 minutes at a rainy Juici Patties Park in Clarendon.
However, three late goals from Akito Graham, Khesanio Hall and Dicoy Daley in the last 14 minutes secured a memorable win for STETHS, who will now play Manchester High in today’s final.
“It was a big performance from the players,” Wedderburn said. “At half-time, I told the players that we just need to get back a goal to get going because, as they say, ‘champions will always be champions’. We have the know-how.
“They showed real guts and determination,” he added, “true championship pedigree, and this will only make them more confident”.
He’s now looking forward to the Manchester game with added optimism.
“I know it will be a competitive game against Manchester, but we want this title and we are going to do all things possible to get it.”
