Jamaica cop gold at Santo Domingo Open
The Jamaican pair of Gareth Henry and Samuel O’Brien Ricketts made Jamaica proud last week when they won gold for Jamaica, defeating the Brazilian pair of Hugo Arthuso and Alex Yuwan Tjong in a thrilling three-setter 19-21, 21-16, 21-15.
This was one of the matches of the tournament as the Jamaicans were not even a seeded team, but beat all the seeded opponents to get to the final.
In the quarter-finals they beat Nelson Javier and Alberto Roposo of the Dominican Republic (second seeds) 21-19, 21-7, and in the semi-finals they defeated Federico Diaz and Pablo Macagno of Cuba in another exciting encounter, 19-21, 21-17, 21-13.
This now puts the Jamaican players in a good position to qualify for international tournaments, such as the CAC and Commonwealth Games next year.
The team returned to the island last Friday.
