More gold for Alia
Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson won her third consecutive 100 breaststroke gold medal on the FINA World Cup tour yesterday in Singapore.
In another dazzling display of explosive speed, Atkinson again easily dominated her competition. Reacting fastest to the gun in .63 of a second, she went out like a rocket, and was ahead of the field at the 50-metre mark by over a second with her split of 29.89. Atkinson was once again flirting with the world record pace set by Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyt of 29.56.
Atkinson, who has the record in all breaststroke events for Jamaica, came back the fastest as well with a split of 33.59 seconds to win in a time of 1:03.48 minutes.
Her nearest competitor was Japan’s Mio Motegi, who ended in 1:05.29 minutes.
Atkinson was not among the medals in the 200 individual medley, placing sixth in 2:09.31 minutes. The event was won Hungarian World Cup tour leader and world record holder Katinka Hosszu in 2:05.33 minutes. She was followed home by Australians Emily Seebohm and Alicia Coutts in 2:07.10 and 2:07.32 minutes, respectively.
Atkinson has so far won 17 medals on the tours so far, having copped gold medals in the 100m and 50m breaststroke, and bronze in the 100m individual medley at the Eindhoven meet; silver and gold in the 100m and 50m breaststroke, respectively, and bronze in the 100m individual medley at the Berlin meet; silver medals in the 100m and 50m breaststroke, and bronze in the 100m individual medley at Moscow; gold and silver in the 100m and 50m breaststroke, respectively, and gold in the 100m individual medley in Dubai; gold and silver again in the 100m and 50m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m individual medley in Doha.
