Road safety tour heads west
IN an effort to reduce fatalities, the Road Safety Unit’s (RSU) Road Tour heads to western Jamaica this weekend.
“We will be going to Savanna-la-Mar [Westmoreland], Negril [Hanover], and Sam Sharpe Square in Montego Bay on Saturday,” said Kenute Hare, director of the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing’s RSU.
“We’ll be spreading the road safety gospel,” he continued.
Hare said that since the start of the year 244 persons have lost their lives on the island’s roadways. This is 26 more than the previous year.
“We want to appeal to commuters to take every precaution while using the roads… obey the speed limits, wear your seatbelts; bikers wear your helmets;, and pedestrians, please use the designated crossings,” he said.
Seventy-one pedestrians have been killed since January compared to 69 for the same period.
Hare is, however, confident the death toll will be below 300.
“It can happen, but everyone has to play their part,” he said.
