IT has been 31 years since singer Paketo Wilson cut his first song for producer Winston Riley’s Techniques label.

Countless recordings later, he has finally got the breakthrough. Inna De Yard, a song he recorded with chanter Derajah, made the soundtrack for the movie Blue Caprice.

The film, based on the Washington DC sniper murders in October, 2002, opened in the United States two months ago. It stars Isaiah Washington and Tequan Richmond.

Wilson, 60, says it is his biggest achievement in over 30 years of recording.

“For years mi want a song bus’ pon the radio an’ dis happen. Is like mi lick the jackpot.”

Inna De Yard was produced by Franklyn Irving on a track recorded in 1982 by the Roots Radics Band at Channel One.

West Kingston-born Wilson kicked off his career with the New Vibration band which had experienced members in trumpeter Bobby Ellis and guitarist Winston ‘Bo Pee’ Bowen.

Around the same time, he linked with Riley who produced his first batch of songs which included Cup of Tea and Bubbling.

In the late 1980s, Wilson had a three-year stint in Germany fronting a band called Soon Come which also included Germans and Africans.

To date, Wilson has recorded one album, Mi Nuh Care, which he co-produced with American Harriet Gruber.

Wilson appreciates Inna De Yard’s ‘appearance’ in a Hollywood movie but says after 30-odd years making music, he remains grounded.

“Mi neva mek music fi material gain. If it was dat, me’d stop long time.”
