Champions Wolmer’s advance in ISSA/Wata football tournament
DEFENDING champions Wolmer’s Boys are among the usual suspects who have secured spots in the second round of the ISSA/Wata Under-14 and Under-16 football competitions as the preliminary round ended on Thursday.
Wolmer’s were placed in group C in both categories, but did not have things their own way in the Under-14s as they drew with both Waterford and Dunoon.
They remained unbeaten, however, and managed to hand Edith Dalton James a 9-0 drubbing in their penultimate game. Bridgeport eventually took first place in the group with Wolmer’s as runner-up. Dunoon also qualified as one of the top third-place finishers with 10 points, just two behind Bridgeport.
Wolmer’s Under-16s started poorly as they lost 0-1 away to Waterford in the first game of the round. The Heroes Circle boys demonstrated great character and returned to win all the remaining games, taking the group ahead
of Waterford.
In group A, rising stars Holy Trinity used the momentum gathered from the first games where their Under-14s tagged St Georges College 4-0 and the Under-16s drew 2-2 with their more illustrious neighbours.
‘Trinity’, as they are affectionately called, finished first in both categories with St George’s accompanying them in second spot.
Jamaica College were imperious in Group B. The Under-14s totally dominated the opposition and won every game to finish ahead of Vauxhall. In the Under-16s category, the Old Hope Road boys drew their first game 0-0 with Vauxhall, but improved afterwards to win the remaining four encounters. Vauxhall were also second to JC in this category.
Group D was different from most of the others as four different schools were able to qualify in the two categories. Calabar were the outstanding team in the Under-14s as they easily won all five games. Penwood High finished second with one loss and four victories.
In the Under-16s, St Andrew Technical were the standouts with four wins and one tie. STATHS registered the biggest win of the group, a 7-0 whipping of St Andrew College. St Jago finished second to the Spanish Town Road-based school.
Jonathan Grant High were the dominant team in Group E in the Under-14s. They finished on top of Kingston College in a very competitive group, which also
had Spanish Town High
and Camperdown.
Kingston College took no prisoners in the Under-16s category as they won six out of seven and drew the other. The ‘Purples’ were clear of Camperdown, who finished second with six points behind in a tight competition.
Hydel High were the giant killers in Group F. The school, situated on the border between the Corporate Area and Spanish Town, won both the Under-14s and Under-16s divisions.
In the Under-14s, they finished ahead of Campion College and were victors ahead of Haile Selassie in the higher age group.
Group H saw Denham Town taking the Under-14s ahead of Cumberland, with Excelsior snatching the Under-16s in front of Norman Manley High.
The second round is scheduled to get under way on Monday, November 18.
