Royal Vibes the pick of the lot
The lone Restricted Stakes race on the programme for imported three year olds and upward (NW3 & maidens) and (NB three year olds), brings together a well-matched field of eight in the $715,000 United Racehorse Trainers Association Trophy at Caymanas Park today.
Today’s programme is the first leg of another two-day racing festival, including tomorrow at the Mecca of thoroughbred racing in the Caribbean.
Today’s penultimate race and highlighter of the 11-race programme is scheduled to go to post at approximately 4:35 pm with first post at noon.
Despite the presence of three runners from the stables of champion and leading trainer Wayne DaCosta, the event lacks a true standout performer in the extended sprint trip going 1,820 metres.
Recent winner over the trip Royal Vibes, one of the three runners saddled by DaCosta, is well drawn at barrier #7 for stable rider Dick Cardenas and carries top weight of 54.0kg and will more than likely be biding his time on the outside for the first 1,000 metres before Cardenas lets him loose to run freely as he likes it.
His only two wins for the season were scored going 1,820 metres and looks the best choice for a repeat even with top weight.
The chestnut filly Fantabulous, ridden by Dane Nelson who tracked Royal Vibes back to the line on last at a safe distance of four lengths, will again be putting in his best work after setting down for the final 400 metres drive but might again be a trifle late.
Another, who is expected to be closing a little earlier for his piece of the closing action, is the bay gelding El Cliente ridden by leading jockey Omar Walker. When El Cliente last attempted the trip, he and Royal Vibes sat level at the weights, but finished a disappointing 12 3/4 lengths third.
Now if his preparation is anything to go by, then the Gordon Lewis-trained El Cliente is expected to be much closer on this occasion.
Laptop is another who must be taken seriously to go close. In his last event he finished a close up second to Ibelieveinmiracle going over today’s distance when ridden by Dane Nelson. He was, however, awarded the race by the Stewards after he was deemed to be impeded by the winner.
Returning just as fit with another champion jockey up in Shane Ellis, Laptop trained by Michael Beecham will also be putting in his best work at the tail-end of the race for his share of the bacon.
Mr Luval, a stablemate of Royal Vibes, enjoys this type of distance and is light enough to challenge for one of the minor places ridden by Leo Miller.
