JAMAICANS breathed a sigh of relief last night as Tessanne Chin made it into the top eight on the NBC televised talent show, The Voice.

There were nervous moments as her name was the fifth of the eight to be called during the live elimination show.

Chin showed clear signs of nerves as both her Adam Levine-coached teammates, James Wolpert and Will Champlin, were among the early finalists.

The announcement of her name by host Carson Daly left Chin visibly relieved and elicited wild cheers inside the Universal Studios, from where the show is broadcast.

The live audience included Chin’s father Richard and sister Tami.

A confident Chin later took to the stage with fellow competitor Caroline Pennell for a performance of Royals by Lorde.

The other contestants who joined Chin for next week’s performance round are: Matthew Schuler, Ray Boudreaux, Jacquie Lee, Cole Vosbury, and Caroline Pennell who was saved by live votes on Twitter.

The acts eliminated were Austin Jenckes and Kat Robichaud.

On Monday night, Chin delivered a standout performance of Gladys Knight’s If I Were Your Woman in front of a live studio audience which included male Athlete of the Year and sprint king, Jamaican Usain Bolt, who was in Los Angeles to promote his book.

Bolt attended the televised talent show to lend support to his fellow Jamaican.

Reports put the American television audience for Monday’s show at just over 10 million viewers.

Following Chin’s performance on Monday night, her coach, Levine, noted that he was happy to have talked her into performing the soul music classic as her delivery solidified her as a major contender for the title.
