Lucea youth mayor wants to build perimeter fencing at his school
LUCEA, Hanover — NEWLY elected Youth Mayor of Lucea, Clinton Brown says he plans to undertake the construction of a perimeter fence at his Watford Primary School in the Hopewell Division during his term in office, in a bid to keep intruders at bay.
“Now, the project that I am planning to do is to build a wall to block out some of the persons that are coming in on the school compound,” Clinton told the Jamaica Observer West on Monday, shortly after he was robed by Mayor of Lucea Shernet Haughton.
Clinton further explains, “Persons are coming on the school without permission from the principal or from anyone who is in charge. I would like to start off by building a wall to block them out, so they want to come to the school, they have to get permission.”
As youth mayor, Clinton is expected to implement a community development project, under the supervision of the Hanover Parish Council.
He hopes to start working on the project in January.
The selection of a youth mayor was made on Monday at the municipal building of the Hanover Parish Council, in recognition of Local Government Month which is being celebrated under the theme: ‘A Prosperous Economy Starts with my Community.’
Meanwhile, Mayor Haughton in congratulating Clinton pledged her commitment to the project.
“Whatever project he chooses as youth mayor, we (Hanover Parish Council) will be in total agreement with him. We will be giving him $100,000 towards his project. So, whatever he chooses, the council will support him,” Haughton emphasised.
The 11-year-old boy was selected from a group of six students, representing six of the seven parish council divisions in Hanover. The representative from Rusea’s High School in the Lucea Division was absent.
Tyreek Friginette of the Knockalva Technical High School in the Chester Castle Division was named deputy youth mayor, while third place went to Daniella Brown of Askenish All-Age in the Riverside Division
The other contestants were Audria Jackto of Kendal Primary in the Cauldwell Division, Rasheka Campbell of the Sandy Bay Primary and Junior High in the Sandy Bay Division and Danielle Miller of Green Island High in the Green Island division.
