Today’s, Splash is dedicated to the ancehall genre. Through our guest contributors Clyde McKenzie, Ralson Barrett, Rory Gilligan, GT Taylor, and Dr Dennis Howard, we are looking at figures who established themselves as artistes, producers, and trendsetters.
Bogle — ‘Mr Wackie’ ruled the dancefloor with his innovative moves and out-of-this-world fashions.
Biggy — Designer to the stars. His creations were made famous by artistes including Grammy winner Shabba Ranks.
Junjo Lawes — Music producer who brought style to the dancehall with his linen suits and ‘felt’ hats.
Yellowman — Drove a yellow car, wore yellow suits. Standard bearer for deejays.
Eek-a-Mouse — the first singjay.
Super Cat — Distinctive deejay delivery influenced acts like Grammy winners Sean Paul and Damian ‘Junior Gong’ Marley.
Ninjaman — love him or hate him, the ‘original gold teeth Don Gorgon’ made badness cool.
Lady Saw — Broke dancehall’s glass ceiling with a flood of hits. Showed she can roll with the big boys.
Steely and Clevie — Producers who became kings of dancehall’s digital age.
Tenor Saw — His fabulous yodel makes him a dancehall original.
