Holy Family are Samsung Cup urban champions
HOLY Family Primary captured the 2013 Samsung Cup urban title with a 1-0 victory over Quest Preparatory at Stadium East on Saturday.
Justice Dunn scored the all-important goal in the 20th minute.
Quest, who were runners-up to Lannaman’s Preparatory in the Enriquez Cup on Friday, started the game on fire, but were unable to capitalise on the goal-scoring opportunities.
Jahiem Rose got the first opportunity in the third minute when he got a through pass, but watched his going wide.
The second chance came five minutes later when Andre Burgess long-range shot grazed the crossbar, and that put the icing on the first half which ended goalless.
But Holy Family Primary were not to be left out of the early action as they started the second half strong with a couple of shots at the Quest goal.
Among the chances was Amain Brady’s free kick that rattled the crossbar. But the decisive blow was Dunn’s header that flew past the Quest’s goalkeeper and into the net. The goal sent the Holy Family players and supporters in wild celebrations.
But before the champions could start their celebration, they had to repel a three-minute spell of Quest pressure as they latter sought the equalising goal in an effort to force the game into penalties. Their industry paid dividends when they won a penalty, but captain Jhadi Williams failed to make the life-saving shot count.
Victorious coach Raphelita Banner commended her team for the victory. “Well done, they did it by themselves. Hard work paid off, I’m just happy for them, well done,” she said.
Marketing manager of Samsung, Karen Gardener, said, “This tournament is awesome and full of excitement.”
“I really enjoyed myself and we will be right back here in two weeks time for the grand final of the Samsung Cup,” she pointed out.
Samsung ambassador, former Reggae Boyz captain Ricardo ‘Bibi’ Gardner, while pleased with the enthusiasm of the young players, rued the lack of support of parents.
Holy Family Primary’s Justice Dunn was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the tournament.
The rural area stage of the tournament to be held in Montego Bay, will see the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final to take place on December 7 at Catherine Hall.
The champion emerging from those play-offs will meet urban champions Holy Family Primary in the grand championship final match slated for December 14 at Stadium East.
The winning team will win for their school a media centre worth US$10,000 (J$1.3 million) courtesy of Samsung.
