Goos Start – Reno FC, Norwood Strikers win in JFF Western Confed League
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — FORMER champions and last season’s beaten finalists Reno FC and Norwood Strikers were winners in their opening Jamaica Football Federation Captain’s Bakery and Grill/Charleys JB Rum Western Confederation Super League games
on Tuesday.
Reno came from a goal down to beat Village United 4-1 at Elliston Wakeland Centre, while Norwood Strikers edged promoted Sandals Whitehouse 2-1 at the UDC playfield in Montego Bay.
They joined Savannah SC as early leaders, all on three points after Savannah had beaten newcomers Lucea FC 2-1 in the opening game on Sunday at Jarrett Park.
Also on Tuesday, Granville United and newly promoted Montego Bay Boys Club played out a 0-0 draw in the St James derby played on the grounds of the Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College.
Meanwhile, at Elliston Wakeland, Reno scored three goals in a 13-minute second half spell, to complete their come from behind win.
Devron Clarke had given the home team the lead after only seven minutes, but the lead lasted only three minutes before schoolboy Melvin Blair brought Reno level, as the teams went to the half-time break tied at 1-1.
Junior Neil then gave Reno the lead in the 60th minute; Denmark Gillings added another in the 69th minute before Tremmaine Perry rounded off the scoring in the 73rd minute.
Norwood Strikers opened their season with a win, turning back Sandals Whitehouse with goals from Garfield Hall in the 34th minute and Dane Gillette in the 75th minute.
Dwayne Blake pulled one back for the Westmoreland club in the 81st minute, but that was as close as they would get.
In Sunday’s opening games, Ron Daley scored twice for Savannah SC in their 2-1 win over Lucea at Jarrett Park, before defending champions Wadadah and Tomorrow’s People drew 1-1 in the feature game of the double-header.
The competition continues on Sunday with a full slate of six games.
