Irwin to face Holy Family in Samsung Cup grand final
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Irwin Primary created a mild upset, beating Corinaldi Avenue Primary 1-0 to win Saturday’s first ever Samsung Cup Rural Area title at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
Maliko Holness’ acrobatic goal in the second half made the difference in an entertaining game that was watched by an enthusiastic gathering.
The goal came after another was disallowed by the officials as Irwin limited Corinaldi Avenue’s chances at their own goal.
Led by Conroy Allen, who was named the tournament MVP, Irwin Primary had the better scoring chances despite Corinaldi Avenue’s more skilful players.
Irwin will now travel to Kingston this weekend to face Urban Area champions Holy Family at the Stadium East field for the national title after Corinaldi Avenue meet Quest Prep in the third-place game, set to start at 1:00 pm.
Irwin just managed to make it into the final after two close wins, while Corinaldi Avenue advanced with two easy wins by a 6-0 aggregate score.
After edging Holland High 4-3 in the quarter-final game earlier in the day, it took sudden death penalty kicks, 7-6 over Howard Cooke Primary for Irwin to make it to the decider.
Corinaldi Avenue first beat St James Prep 2-0 in their quarter-final game before brushing aside a promising Bethel Primary 4-0 in the semi-finals.
In the other quarter-final games, Bethel had beaten Clarks Town 3-2 and Howard Cooke beat Mt Alvernia Prep 7-0.
