Delroy waugh, da thomas strike at 60-1
Trainer Delroy Waugh struck in upsetter fashion on Sunday at the Park to record his first win for 2013 from 14 starts.
Waugh watched with glee as his three-year-old chestnut filly Minniffia ridden by jockey DA Thomas strolled to a relatively easy win over 1,300 metres (six and a half furlongs) in a maiden condition event.
For Thomas who can now be listed as a journey man jockey it was his fourth winner for the year from 124 rides. Minniffia is by Emmanuel – Hole in the Heart. The winning time was 1:23.3 minutes. Minniffia won at odds of 60-1.
“TADDY” MORRISON BACK IN THE WINNERS’ ENCLOSURE
Charles ‘Taddy’ Morrissey has been around racing for umpteen years and is respected for his knowledge and love for horses.
From time to time “Taddy’ reminds us of his prowess as a true conditioner by visiting the winners’ enclosure as he did on Sunday when young apprentice Davidan Robinson brought, the Morrissey trained Mr Theophilus with a scorching run win over 1,700 metres in a $180,000 claiming race.
For ‘Taddy’ it was his second winner for the year from 49 starts. Apprentice Robinson has feared a tad better riding his seventh winner from 103 rides.
SHANE ELLIS CONTINUES FINE FORM
Jockey Shane ‘Canterman’ Ellis has hit a purple patch. He has been racking up the winners like never before and this rich vein of form continue on Sunday with another fine double in the two trophy races on offer, the Sunnyside Stakes and the Jamaica Racehorse Owners’ Association Trophy.
In the Sunnyside Stakes a race confined to two-year-old fillies, Ellis got the job superbly done on the Anthony Nunes trained Elias Haloute owner Hija De Reina who got the better of Raeven Renae and Thekidisnotmyson. Hija De Reina went off at odds of 12/1.
`Some punters say that Ellis and the connections of Hija De Reina were somewhat lucky as the big favourite in the event, Miss Juanita was badly interfered with by Fiftyonestorm leaving the four furlong marker on the course. It was an interference which caused the rider of Magic City, Richard Lunan to fall. Fortunately everything was ok with young Lunan.
The ‘Canterman’ then piloted the Lawrence Freemantle trained Military Move over 10-furlongs to win the Jamaica Racehorse Owners’ Association trophy. Many spectators at the track were of the view that Military Man should have been disqualified after causing interference to the howling favourite Raging Prospect in the last half-a-furlong of the race.
A change of stick hold from the left hand to his right by Ellis pushed Military Move to dart to his left and in doing so apparently took ground from Raging Prospect. After a lengthy stewards’ inquiry the gentlemen from Winchester Road decided to take no action.
