Streaks snapped
WESTERN CONFERENCE — IT was a week of streaks coming to an end in the NBA this week, but especially in the West where the longest win-streak is Dallas’ (13-8) three.
Despite this, the Portland Trailblazers had a good week, with convincing wins over top competition. They ended the sportsweek with a record of 17-4 at the top of the conference standings. They overcame the stellar Pacers 106-102 on Monday as LaMarcus Aldridge scored 28 and drew down 10 rebounds.
MVP chants would abound as Aldridge repeated his superb form in a 111-104 win over the OKC Thunder (14-4) with a 38-point and 13-rebound game. However, they would end the week, narrowly defeated by the Maverick’s 108-106.
The other Texan team, the San Antonio Spurs (15-4) had their midweek clash with the Minnesota Timberwolves postponed due to smoke in the arena but ended up losing to the Indiana Pacers at home for the first time since 2002, 111-100.
Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors (12-9) were involved in two high-octane games this week as the ‘Splash Brothers’ Curry and Thompson led them to a 27-point comeback versus the Toronto Raptors as the Warriors ended the game on a 64-28 run to win 112-103.
There would be no miraculous comeback against the Houston Rockets (14-7) however, as James Harden scored 38 and Dwight Howard had 22 points and 18 rebounds in a poor shooting night for Golden State. The Rockets won 105-83.
EASTERN CONFERENCE — Records set in the East
KYLE Korver equalled and then broke Dana Barros’ record of 89 consecutive games with three-pointers this week in helping third-seeded Atlanta Hawks to an 11-10 record. The Hawks defeated western foe, the LA Clippers (13-8) 107-97 before downing the Cavaliers (7-13) later in the week.
Another record set was the first game in which two rookies amassed triple-doubles. Two of the main rookie-of-the-year contenders, Victor Oladipo and Michael Carter-Williams lined up in opposition for the Orlando Magic (6-13) and the Philadelphia 76ers (7-14) respectively in a double-overtime thriller. The Sixers would eventually get the win.
Meanwhile, second-placed Miami Heat (15-5) had their ten-game win streak snapped in a 107-97 loss to Detroit Pistons (10-10) before going on to lose the Bulls 107-87 as Carlos Boozer and Joachim Noah combined for 44 points and 24 rebounds. They would, however, bounce back to dispatch the Timberwolves, sans Kevin Love, 103-82.
Indiana continue to impress with an 18-2 record, heading into a clash with the Thunder after wins over the Jazz and the Spurs.
The New York Knicks (5-14) also snapped their losing skid versus fellow underperformers, Jason Kidd’s struggling Brooklyn Nets before going on to blow out the Magic 121-83.
