Cornwall College favourites for ISSA/Wata U-16 title

Cornwall College will be seeking to end an unbeaten season by retaining their ISSA/Wata Rural Area Under-16 title this afternoon as the season ends with a double-header at Manchester High School in Mandeville.

Cornwall College will take on St Elizabeth Technical in the Under-16 game set to start at 2:45 pm after Old Harbour High and Petersfield High meet to decide the Under-14 title, starting at 1:00 pm.

All four finalists today capitalised on home field advantage in Tuesday’s semi-finals to earn their place in the finals — Old Harbour High edged Vere Technical 1-0 at Soya Oval and Petersfield High beat Grange Hill 2-0 in an all-Westmoreland game at Petersfield.

In the Under-16, St Elizabeth Technical beat Manchester High 3-0 in Santa Cruz, while Cornwall College edged Petersfield High 1-0 in Montego Bay.

Cornwall College have lost just once since last season, a first-round game to Muschett High, but had to work for their victory on Tuesday, with the red-hot former national Under-15 player Jourdaine Fletcher scoring with three minutes to go against Petersfield, whom they had beaten 2-0 in the second round.

After a 6-1 beating of Paul Bogle High on Friday, Cornwall were expected to have had an easier game on Tuesday, but Petersfield made adjustments and came within minutes of forcing extra time and maybe penalties.

The home team created a number of chances, but Alrick Ottey wasted at least two in the first half.

With the teams locked at 0-0 and extra time fast approaching, Fletcher who scored five times in the previous two games, rose to the occasion when he got the better of Petersfield High’s goalkeeper Akeem Brown and shot home a fumble from close range.
