DaCosta, Cardenas — the top combination
JOCKEY Dick ‘Wily Coyote’ Cardenas, who is third in the jockeys’ championship, and trainer Wayne DaCosta are on their way to being the most dominant jockey/trainer combination for this year at Caymanas Park.
The duo has so far racked up 38 wins, 30 second positions and 25 third place finishes from 172 mounts, which translates to a winning percentage of 22.
They are closely followed by the ever dangerous duo of four-time champion jockey Omar ‘Hot’ Walker who is currently chasing his fifth jockeys’ title and the ever consistent and most improved second generation trainer Gary Subratie, who is second in the trainers’ race. This duo has so far achieved 30 wins, 23 second positions and 18 third-place finishes from 121 mounts for a winning percentage of 25.
In third place are Dane ‘Warrior Chief’ Nelson and Richard Azan, who is currently fifth in the trainers’ race.Their partnership has so far earned them 24 wins, 18 second positions and six third-place finishes from 67 mounts, with their percentage being 33.
While the top three combinations speak for themselves, it is interesting to note the development of a number of combinations which have produced some good results.
Quite a strong partnership has developed between trainer Ian Parsard and jockey Richard Mitchell, culminating in the victory of Uppa Tune in the Talawah Mile on Super Day in November. Parsard and Mitchell have combined for six wins.
Although nowhere near the top, it is encouraging to see the apprentices appear on this list. Leading this bunch of young riders is Richard Lunan who has thus far combined with trainer Phillip Elliot for four wins from 25 starts.
The very popular Prince Holder is in 10th position, having joined forces with trainer Raymond Townsend for three wins.
