New Year’s Day Caymanas feature gets $1.5-million boost
THE 14th running of the New Year’s Day McKay Security Trophy will be sponsored to the tune of $1.5 million, it was announced at a press conference at Caymanas Park yesterday.
The race will form a part of a day of racing dedicated to the fans.
CEO of McKay Security Ltd, Jason McKay, said his company was proud to be associated with Caymanas Track Ltd and the trophy race, especially since his security firm is contracted to keep racetrack safe.
“As a major player at the track we show that confidence in the administration, where the management and the board are working towards the common goal,” he explained.
McKay said the race, in particular, is like the most prestigious event to take place at Caymanas Park.
“This is the derby that we really know. We have been doing this from 2000, and after 14 years of sponsorship, it has become the most important race day that we are involved in.” said the tae kwon do man.
Cedric Stewart, CEO of Caymanas Track Ltd, who also addressed the launch, welcomed the sponsorship.
“We at CTL are excited at the prospects of racing in the new year. We have seen an increased and improved racing product which is translated into an increase in sales, and I am very excited,” he said.
Racing Secretary Denzil Miller Jnr encouraged fans to come out and also acknowledged their longtime partner.
Come New Year’s Day, we will have a lot of fun and excitement, giveaways and other prizes as well as free entry to the track. I also want to applaud McKay Security for their 14-year commitment.”
The New Year’s Fan Appreciation race day may see two contested races for the McKay Security Trophy over 1,820 metres if there are too many entries. This as it is a $180,000 claimers event, the lowest class of horses at Caymanas Park. In order to accommodate both races, the purse will be split $750,000 for both winners.
Also on the card will be a four-year-old and upwards race to be contested over 1,300 metres for a purse of $700,000, as well as the The CTL Fan Appreciation Trophy for Overnight Allowance horses to be contested over 1,820 metres.
