Champions to be honoured at special ceremony
THE champions of horse racing for both 2012 and 2013 will be honoured at a special ceremony scheduled for tomorrow in between the races set for the day. A function to honour the achievers for 2012 was not held hence the recognition and awarding of trophies at tomorrow’s ceremony.
Recently it was announced that Princess Popstar was voted as the Horse of the Year, the first two-year-old to do so while Typewriter was the first runner-up and St Cecelia the second runner-up. It is still uncertain whether or not Princess Popstar will make an appearance before her legion of fans who are sure to be present tomorrow at the racetrack.
Trainer Wayne DaCosta will once again take the trophy as champion trainer, the 13th time in his career as a conditioner, that he will be crowned champion trainer. DaCosta had a stellar 2013 with notable victories in the Jamaica Derby and the Boom St Leger with Perfect Neighbour.
Trainer Anthony Ferguson was voted as the most improved trainer after scoring eight wins in 2013 compared to none in 2012.
In the jockeys’ section, Dane Nelson retained his title after an intriguing battle with Omar Walker, while the very popular Prince ‘Dagger Man’ Holder wears the title of most improved apprentice. Holder started his racing career on September 8, 2012.
Carlton Watson won the owners’ crown literally on the last two racedays of 2103 after a ding-dong fight with W B Racing. This is a first time achievement for Watson whose horses include Sweet Trail (now at stud), Double The Honey, Jack De Charmer, Royal Vibes and others.
For the umpteenth time HAM Stables is the champion breeder mainly through their noted stallion Traditional.
Maurice Hart from the stables of trainer Lorne Kirlew won the title of champion groom.
