‘Come to your senses’
A small group of India’s ruling Congress Party supporters shout slogans after they burn an effigy of Tamil Nadu state chief minister Jayaram Jayalalitha during a protest in Allahabad, India, yesterday. The Tamil Nadu state had ruled that seven men serving life sentences for the 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi should be freed because they have served more than 20 years in prison. India’s top court, yesterday, stopped the Government of Tamil Nadu state from releasing three of the seven prisoners, a lawyer said. The Banner in the centre reads, “Jayalalitha, come to your senses.” John Joseph, brother of police officer Edward Joseph who was killed during the 1991 assassination broke down momentarily as he addressed the media in Chennai, India. The relatives of some of the sixteen other victims have mounted protests promising to fight the decision. (PHOTO: AP)
