Chanderpaul, Campbelle named Guyana’s top sports personalities
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – West Indies cricketers Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Shemaine Campbelle were named Guyana’s 2013 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year by a National Sports Commission panel on Friday.
Chanderpaul, who was nominated by the Guyana Cricket Board and the Guyana Boxing Association, received seven of the 14 panelists’ votes while powerlifter Winston Stoby (5) and quarter-miler Winston George (2).
Campbelle was nominated and supported by journalists Claude David and Aletha Grant-Charles respectively and not previously nominated by any association. She defeated hockey player Alysia Xavier 10-4 in a second round of voting.
Track athlete Jason Yaw and table tennis player Chelsea Edghill claimed the junior awards.
The panel also named Sports Team of the year, Squash Team; Sports Association of the year, Table Tennis; Most Improved Association, Boxing; and Coach of the year, Terrence Poole (boxing).
The Sports Journalist (print) went to Chris Campbell of Stabroek News with Guyana Times’ Avenesh Ramzan taking the non-print and Orlando Charles also of Stabroek News, the Sports Photographer of the year.
Gibran Sarfaraz will receive the special award for Persons with Disability when the National Awards presentation takes place on March 28.
