Blast Them Away returns in style
Owner Robert Thomas was a very happy man yesterday at Caymanas Park.
After receiving the trophy for owning the top imported horse Blast Them Away for 2013 at the Champions of Racing ceremony, he watched with great delight as his five-year-old bay horse put away his six rivals to win the feature race on the programme, the Eileen Cliggott Memorial Trophy over 1,300 metres.
With Dick Cardenas guiding the course, Blast Them Away was kept off the pace set in earnest by Kipling Weekend and stable companion Double The Honey before launching his attack on the outside. Cardenas had to ride hard as Double The Honey and Potcheen were not giving up at any stage. In the end Blast Them Away pulled away for a three-quarter-length win over Double The Honey and Potcheen.
“This was a hard fought win. It was Blast Them Away’s first run for the season and he can only get better from this outing. His time of 1:20.0 minutes was pretty good and he seems to have developed the habit of winning his races, but not impressively,” said the conditioner of Blast Them Away, Wayne DaCosta.
Dane Nelson also revelling in the delight of receiving his trophy that crowned him champion jockey for the second time in his career, rode a triple to speed ahead in this season’s championship. His winners were Type Two for trainer Stephen Todd, Official Report for Carl Anderson, and Go Go Yvonne for Spencer Chung.
