Crumbie defeats Migoko in straight sets
TOP-SEED Donovan Crumbie defeated unseeded Yussuf Migoko in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 to capture the inaugural staging of the 2014 General Accident Insurance Men’s Class One singles title at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Sunday.
Crumbie, who is a graduate of GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sports, did not find the going easy against Migoko as he knocked out second-seed Matthew Rodriquez in the second round.
Meanwhile, Crumbie said he was very happy with the win as it was really a tough match playing against Migoko who is one of the better singles players in the island.
“From the opening set my strategy was to put the pressure early on Migoko, as he is a difficult player to play. Also I came out firing and had the match under control. However, I lost focus in the second set and I had to rally from 0-2 down to get back on even terms and, in the process, took total control of the match,” said Crumbie, who coaches at the Hillel Academy.
Crumbie, who started the match by holding serve, saw Migoko doing likewise to make the scores 1-1. Both held service in the third and fourth games, respectively, for a 2-2 tie. They were locked at 3-3 as they traded long rallies playing from the back of thebaseline.
The champ held serve in the seventh game for a 4-3 lead, then broke Migoko with a nice net drop in the next to move closer and take the set holding a 5-3 lead. Crumbie served for the set and held on to win 6-3.
In the semi-finals of the Men’s Class One, played last Saturday at the same venue, Crumbie defeated fourth-seeded Alan McNab, who retired in the third sets, 5-7, 6-2, 2-2 (retired), while Migoko knocked out unseeded Orick Angus in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Meanwhile, the Men’s Class Two final was won by top seed Leighton Burton, who beat second-seeded Stephen Shirley in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. In the semis, Burton beat unseeded Sheldon McDonald in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, while Shirley stopped fifth-seed Gordon Chuck in two sets 6-3, 6-2.
Fourth-seeded Norman Marshall came from a set down to beat unseeded Scott Jones in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to capture the Men’s Class Three singles title. Marshall eliminated Ricardo Livingston, and Jones pulled off a three-set win over third-seeded Michael Lyncook, 2-6, 7-5 10-4 (super tie-breaker).
