Benitez on course for another Europa title
LONDON, England (AP) — Rafa Benitez remains on course for back-to-back Europa League titles after Napoli overcame Swansea to make the last 16 yesterday.
The Spanish manager, who lifted the trophy with Chelsea last season, saw his new team emerge 3-1 winners over Swansea after a goalless first leg in south Wales. Napoli will next face Eintracht Frankfurt.
Swansea’s result continued the lacklustre start to the group stage in European competitions by Premier League sides, with all four failing to win their Champions League matches in the last week or so.
There will be an all-Spanish meeting in the round of 16 next month after Sevilla ousted Maribor and Real Betis beat Rubin Kazan.
Ronaldo’s marketing agency signs deal with Nadal
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) — Brazilian football legend Ronaldo and tennis star Rafael Nadal are teaming up in Brazil.
Ronaldo’s sports marketing agency announced yesterday it has reached a deal to manage Nadal’s advertising contracts in Brazil.
The agency said the “non-exclusive” agreement was reached with Goramendi Siglo XXI, which handles the tennis player’s image rights worldwide.
Ronaldo said in a statement “Nadal is a lot more than just a new partner, he’s an idol that all of us learned to admire for his talent on the courts and for the kind of person that he is”.
The number one-ranked Nadal joins Ronaldo’s list of other top sports personalities he manages in Brazil, including Neymar, Rubens Barrichello and Anderson Silva.
Ronaldo was at the Rio Open final last week to watch Nadal win the title.
Another slow start for Tiger
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida (AP) — Zach Johnson made a quadruple-bogey eight on his second hole and still managed a 67 in the Honda Classic yesterday.
Tiger Woods had good birdie chances on his opening four holes and couldn’t break par.
Johnson made seven birdies after his soggy start — two straight shots into the water — and it took a few minutes for him to digest a wild round at PGA National. He looked as though he might have shot himself out of the tournament, but he ended the round two shots behind co-leaders William McGirt and Rory Sabbatini among the early starters.
Woods was playing for the first time in a month — and only his third tournament this year — and he didn’t show many signs of rounding into form. Coming off pedestrian finishes at Torrey Pines and Dubai, the world’s number one player couldn’t make any putts until he was scrambling for par.
He had only three birdies in a round of 71 and likely will start the second round today outside the cut line.
